for a world free of sexploitation

Music videos and singers really frustrate me when it comes to objectification of women. Case in point: Beyonce. Yes, she is beautiful and very talented- but she pimped herself out big time. She made a lot more money after selling out but is it really worth it?!!!

Destiny's Child made a great song called Nasty Girl, with the lyrics: "Nasty put some clothes on, I told ya, don't walk out your house without your clothes on". In the film clip above, to the Nasty Girl song, the subscriber has uploaded later footage of the girls showing their hypocrisy!

Of course there are singers who are probably worse than Beyonce in objectifying themselves, such as Lady Gaga. But I don't think Lady Gaga is as popular as Beyonce, for one, and secondly, Beyonce was not like this when she started (maybe she was too young- I think she was 16 when Destiny's Child had their first hit).

I really wish more singers would rely on their talent for success rather than pimping themselves out!!

I don't think I have all the answers...especially as I've stopped listening to the radio!! But I'll give it a go....

I think that ideally, the solution would be for movements like Collective Shout to encourage artists would develop true respect for themselves and others by focusing on their talent.

Realistically I think it would be easier for movements like Collective Shout to encourage people to avoid artists who pimp themselves out and follow artists who focus on their talent. The execs are most likely to follow the dollar signs.

Thanks Summer for that article....I found it really interesting :)

Clem Bastow writes really well on the issue on how women are treated in the music industry
http://www.theage.com.au/news/music/sex-thing/2005/08/18/1123958136...

It seems apparant that women have no value in the industry unless they are pretty, thin, semi-naked and willing to gyrate for their audience- talent is but small consideration.

Wow go Vanessa! Melinda do you remember that clip you posted on FB from an artist teaching girls how to get into the music industry? She was quite straight up but real. We can all say we want artists to stop 'pimping themselves out' but what is the actual solution here?

I really feel for Lady GaGa who has expressed in interviews she would never have become famous if she'd have known what it cost her.

Yes, I remember that line from Stupid Girls as well, I really liked it!!

Good on Vanessa for resisting the pressure and sticking up for her beliefs! I always respected her for using her talent and not her body.

Yes that is frustrating, the hypocrisy involved. You might also remember Pink's "stupid girls" video which was a fantastic mock up of the celebrity culture and encouraging women not to be a "stupid girl." One of my favourite lines from this song is "what happened to the dream of a female president, she's dancing in a video next to 50 cent." But then Pink is mostly in her knickers as well, so she's doing exactly what she spoke against.

Beyonce is another one for this isn't she. I wonder if women who enter the industry with a view to "empowerment" become slowly desensitised to the industry and gradually give into the expectations. I suppose this has to be done if they want to keep their jobs! That reminds me of another article i read about Vanessa Amarossi, she talked about the reason why she disappeared from the music scene for so many years - her record label wanted her to take off her clothes and she made a decision not to conform. It's a sexist industry. We need more strong women to resist.
