2Day FM news broadcaster joking about child sexual abuse

Did anyone else listen this morning (Friday 21 October) to 2Day FM 104.1 during the news update at 7.25am in Sydney?

The female news broadcaster reported on a news story about child sexual abuse in a way that completely made light of the situation, presenting child sexual abuse in a joking and mirthful manner. I have looked at the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice and it has not breached the Code (how the hell was this not in breach.... )

The news broadcaster reported on a story of a 6 year old girl who had been forced by her mother to film her having group sex. The news broadcaster made jokes, saying 'This mother isn't going to win any Mother of the Year Awards', as well as presenting the entire story in a laughing, mirthful tone of voice.

I would like to point out that this news story (what the mother did) is unequivocally a case of child sexual abuse and should not be considered a laughing or joking matter by anyone, particularly a major commercial radio station and reputable newsreaders who have the potential to influence hundreds of thousands of the listening community with their comments and opinions. If the offender had been a stranger or a male instead of a mother I am sure that the news story would have been presented in a different and more accusatory manner - but just because a mother is a perpetrator of child sexual abuse this does not make it any less of a serious issue.

I would hate to think that the public are being given an image of child sexual abuse through the popular media which construes it as mild or just a joke - or not as 'serious' when the mother is an offender.

Raaaaaagh.

If anyone else heard this or wants to complain please get on the 104.1 website and either make an official complain (they send you our a form) or send an enquiry through to Kyle and Jackie O, as it happened during their shirt.

Sooooo disappointed with commercial radio.

An apology and acknowledgment of wrong doing is a great result. Thanks for taking action on this. Well done.

In good news, I got a letter from the radio station today apologising for the incident. The General Manager said that he reviewed the news story and takes my complaint seriously. He said he has passed on the feedback to the 2Day FM News Director so that they can make sure it doesn't happen in future news segments. I hope this solved the problem - keep me updated if you hear anything else inappropriate and I will be on the case! Kristina
