for a world free of sexploitation
Hi Collective Shout members,
Just wanted to let you know that we are all open to having our comments on Collective Shout quoted elsewhere without our knowledge or permission.
Last year I was lodging complaints about the explicit billboard advertising for Sexpo in my neighbourhood. Some of what I wrote on the Collective Shout page was quoted (with a critical tone) on page 2 of the West Australian newspaper, with my full name printed. I was not contacted by the journalist or given the option of just having my first name printed.
Of course, the small section quoted was the bit where I said I was sickened and appalled, not the longer sentences I wrote rationally giving my reasons. Initially, I was taken aback and concerned for any unwelcome contact at home, especially if my children answered the phone. However, thankfully nothing like that arose.
Hopefully the piece, though short and gossipy, helped some others see some more of the wide acceptance of pornography in our society and that it is possible to argue against it.
Be aware of a broad audience for what you write.
regards
Sally

This is a very good point you've made. As we are growing in number and influence, journalists are paying more attention.
One thing you could do is contact the journalist who wrote the article and ask them to remove your surname from any online article. The other thing people could do if they are concerned about their full names being published is to change their name in this forum. For example Sally, you could change it to 'Sally S' or I think even just the first name. You can do this via clicking on 'settings' on the right hand side and then you'll come to a page where you can make changes.
Regarding being quoted out of context, unfortunately this happens a lot. Good on you for speaking out anyway Sally. We appreciate your support for these issues.
Permalink Reply by Steve on February 16, 2012 at 2:40pm I have to admit that that's one of my biggest fears but what happened to you doesn't surprise me. The slightest hint of anyone daring to question anything related to porn or the other things that CS opposes elicits the reflex cliched insults or innuendo. Good on you, though, for standing your ground. Good point CS, too. I chose to use just my first name and I am so glad you have given us this option.
